Donie is a diminutive with nothing behind it. Every name of this shape is supposed to be the short form of something — and this one has been attached to several different somethings, for sons and for daughters, without ever settling on one. It has been in American records since the very beginning of them.

Our story of Donie
Picture the shape of the problem rather than a particular family. A household has a child called something formal, and nobody uses it: within a week the baby is Donie, and within a year the formal name exists only on the certificate and in the mouths of visiting relatives. Then the family moves, or the census taker comes, or the child starts school, and the name that gets written down is the one everybody actually says. A generation later nobody remembers what the long version was — the diminutive has eaten its parent. That happened to a great many American names in the nineteenth century, and it is the likeliest account of this one. It is offered as a pattern, not as this child's history, which no record preserves.

The candidates are numerous and mutually exclusive. For a son it may shorten Donald, which is a Gaelic compound about world and rule, or it may come from an Irish familiar form used for more than one name. For a daughter it may shorten Donna, or Adonia, or serve as a pet form of something with no D in it at all — nineteenth-century American families were inventive that way. The record carries the short form and not the long one, which is the ordinary situation for names of this kind and the reason no meaning can be given.

Fashion outlook
Donie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, friendly and impossible to get wrong in speech
- Works for a son or a daughter with no adjustment at all
- Genuinely old in American records, which few short names of this shape are
- It reads as a nickname on formal documents, and some adults find that wearing.
- Given to both sexes, so a written list gives no signal about which child is meant.
- There is no full name and no meaning behind it that the record can supply.
