Where it comes from

Our story of Donesha

The doldrums are a place. Near the equator the trade winds of the two hemispheres meet and cancel, leaving a belt of still air with towering thunderstorms and no useful wind, and a sailing ship that drifted into it could sit there for weeks with the crew on short water. Meteorologists call it the intertropical convergence zone, which is accurate and not memorable. The word itself seems to have been built in the early nineteenth century out of the old adjective dull, on the pattern of tantrums, and it was applied first to the state of mind and then to the part of the sea that produced it — or possibly the other way round, since the records overlap. Either way, a feeling and a latitude ended up with one name.

Not established

The Do- front and the -esha ending are free elements. They carry no meaning of their own and combine by sound, which is how this family of names works; no source glosses this spelling and none could.

Pronouncing Donesha

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The ending is one syllable, not two, which is the commonest thing strangers get wrong.

Donesha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 42 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Donesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Both cuts produce short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Danesha, Doniesha and Denisha will all be written for it.
  • It is built from free parts, so the meaning question has an honest short answer.
  • The ending is sometimes read as two syllables, which lengthens the name.
