The story of Donaciano
Saint Donatian was an early bishop of Reims whose relics went to Bruges, where the great church of Saint Donatian stood; Jan van Eyck painted his Madonna with Canon van der Paele for it, and the painting survived though the church was torn down after the French Revolution. The name behind it, Donatus, belonged also to a Roman grammarian whose little Latin textbook was used in schools for a thousand years, so that in medieval English a donet simply meant a primer. Spanish made Donatian into Donaciano.
