The story of Dominique
Dominic was a Roman name with a plainly Christian sense, and it gained enormous reach through the Spanish founder of the Dominican order in the thirteenth century, whose followers spread across Europe within a generation. French made Dominique, and — unusually — kept it for both sexes, which most French names do not do. English-speaking countries borrowed the French form for girls in the twentieth century, and American use peaked in the mid-1980s.
Meaning
of the Lord
From the Latin dominicus, 'belonging to the lord', built on dominus, 'lord' or 'master'. The Sunday connection is direct: dies dominica is the Lord's day, and Romance languages still name Sunday from it — domingo, domenica, dimanche.

The Jeanne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dominique's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jeanne climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jeanne's path sketches the road Dominique is walking now.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and the connection to Sunday is documented rather than folkloric.
- It is a standard name in French for either sex, which gives it real latitude.
- Three syllables with an end stress, which is uncommon and distinctive in English.
- In French-speaking contexts it is fully unisex, so it does not signal sex on paper.
- The end-stressed rhythm is unusual in English and gets flattened by some speakers.
