The story of Dolly
Dorothy was a staple English name from the sixteenth century, and Doll was its ordinary pet form — so ordinary that a child's figure came to be called a doll, a use recorded from the seventeenth century. Dolly is Doll with the affectionate ending. It was in English and American use throughout the nineteenth century, peaking around 1885 with a strong revival in the 1970s.
Meaning
gift of God
Through Dorothea, from the Greek doron, 'gift', and theos, 'god'. It is the same pair of words as Theodora with the halves reversed. English formed Doll from Dorothy by consonant substitution, the same habit that gave Molly from Mary.
