Where it comes from

The story of Dmarion

Francis Marion led a small band of South Carolina militia against the British from the swamps, earning the name Swamp Fox, and more than a dozen counties and many towns across the country are named after him; Marion became a familiar boy's name in the South because of it. In 1946 Marion Motley, a powerful fullback, joined the Cleveland Browns alongside Bill Willis, and the two helped end professional football's exclusion of Black players. Dmarion, with its D- front, belongs to the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Meaning

Built on Marion, with a D- front

Marion began as a French pet form of Marie; in America it became a boy's name through the surname of Francis Marion. The D- front adds sound rather than meaning.

Fashion outlook

Dmarion sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Built on Marion, a name with deep American roots.
  • Distinctive and modern.
  • Rare, so a Dmarion is unlikely to meet another.
What to consider
  • Many forms will not accept an apostrophe, so D'Marion and Dmarion will both appear.
  • People may not know how to say the D-.
  • Marion is now more often a girl's name elsewhere, which some families will want to know.
