The AD dating system was worked out by a monk in 525, and he got the date wrong. Dionysius Exiguus calculated the year of the Nativity a few years late, which is why Herod, who died in 4 BC, outlives the birth he is supposed to have threatened.

Where it comes from

The story of Dionisio

Dionysius Exiguus, Dionysius the Humble, was a monk in Rome who was asked to extend the tables used for calculating Easter. Rather than continue numbering years from the reign of Diocletian, a persecutor, he numbered them from the incarnation, and the system spread through Bede's use of it in the eighth century. His arithmetic put the Nativity a few years too late by the standards of every subsequent reckoning, and there is no year zero, which is why centuries begin awkwardly. The name he carried belongs to the god of wine, which the Church absorbed along with the rest of the theophoric stock; Denis, Dennis, Dionisio and Dionysia all descend from it.

Meaning

Greek Dionysos, the god of wine

From Greek Dionysios, belonging to Dionysos, the god of wine and theater. The name passed into Christian use through several saints, including Denis of Paris. Dionisio is the Spanish and Italian form; the American peak is 1966.

Dionisio sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 23 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dionisio went to 6 boys in 2025, but Dionicio is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 19, which makes it the 909th most-given boys’ name of the year — 9,786 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 89,899 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Dionisio itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
