Where it comes from

Our story of Diondra

The plays that survive from Athens were written for a competition. The City Dionysia was a religious festival in honor of the god, it ran for several days, and playwrights applied to a magistrate for a chorus; three were chosen, each presented three tragedies and a satyr play, and a panel of judges decided the winner. The judges were selected by an elaborate lottery designed to make bribery difficult: names were drawn from urns, ten men chosen, and at the end only five of the ten ballots were counted, also drawn at random. Attendance was close to civic duty and the audience was enormous. Nearly every tragedy anybody reads today was written to win a prize at a festival, in front of judges whose identities were decided by lot on the day, and most of the plays that lost are gone.

The front resembles the Greek god's name and there is no evidence any family took it from there; the ending is a free American element. Both pieces were in wide circulation when this name was made, and the compound has no documented source.

Fashion outlook

Diondra sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Dion detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Deondra, Diandra and Dionda are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The first vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
