Dicie is a southern American pet name and the full name behind it is gone. It is often connected to Eurydice, which would be a striking thing for a nineteenth-century farming family to have chosen, and there is no evidence for it beyond the last two syllables.

Where it comes from

Our story of Dicie

The story the suggested source belongs to is one of the strangest in Greek myth because of what it does not explain. Orpheus goes down after his wife, plays so well that the dead stop what they are doing to listen, is given permission to take her back on the single condition that he does not look behind him until they are out, and looks behind him. The poems do not say why. Some later writers supply a reason, that he could not hear her footsteps or that he doubted, and all of those are additions; the oldest versions simply state that he turned. That silence is the whole force of it. A story with a gap in the middle is remembered longer than one that explains itself.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source can be established. The Eurydice connection is the one usually printed and rests entirely on sound; a build on Dorcas, on Laodicea or on nothing at all are equally available. The name appears in southern records before the federal data begins and no family recorded an explanation.

Pronouncing Dicie

DY-see

Two syllables with the stress at the front and a long first vowel, since a single consonant between vowels leaves it long. Dicey, with an e, is said the same way and appears in the same records.

Dicie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Dicie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and easy for a small child to say and to write.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while containing no unfamiliar sound.
  • The spelling is unambiguous once the first vowel is settled.
What to consider
  • The first syllable is an English word about gambling, and the whole name is close to an adjective about risk.
  • There is no meaning and no recoverable full name to fall back on.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
