Where it comes from

The story of Diamantina

The Hope Diamond's curse is a sales document. The stone was cut down from the French Blue, itself cut from a large Indian diamond bought by a traveler in the seventeenth century, and it vanished during the revolutionary looting of the crown jewels before reappearing, recut, in London. The story that it brought disaster on its owners was assembled and heavily embroidered by dealers and newspapers in the early twentieth century, with Pierre Cartier generally credited with the most effective version, told to a rich American client who liked the idea of owning something dangerous. Several of the deaths attributed to it happened to people who never owned the stone. It is now in a national museum, where the curse is a label rather than a threat.

Meaning

of diamond

The Spanish adjective formed from the word for a diamond, so the sense is diamond-like rather than diamond. Spanish gives adjectives of this kind to daughters directly, which English does only through word names.

Diamantina sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1947, with 19 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Diamantina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tina detaches cleanly and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • The meaning is transparent to any Spanish speaker.
  • Every letter is said, so the spelling follows from the sound.
What to consider
  • Five syllables is very long for American use and will be shortened.
  • Diamantina, Diamanta and Damiana will all be written for it.
  • It is a word rather than a name in Spanish, which readers hear first.
