On the chalk downs of southern England there are shallow saucer-shaped ponds on hilltops, far above any spring, that hold water through a dry summer and have watered sheep for centuries. They are called dewponds, and the name encodes a theory: that they are filled by dew condensing overnight. Measurements suggest dew contributes very little and that rain, mist and the clay-and-straw lining doing its job are the real explanation, with the pond's own coolness helping. The argument has run since the nineteenth century and is not entirely closed. What is not in doubt is that somebody worked out how to keep water on top of a porous hill, and that it worked.
