Devonne
Feminine · “from Devon”
Devonne is given to both — 958 girls and 698 boys since 1880. See Devonne as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Devonne takes an English county, adds a French ending, and is then given to sons almost as often as to daughters. Each of those three facts pulls in a different direction, and the name has never resolved them — which is not a flaw so much as an accurate description of how American names of this period were made.

The story of Devonne
The county's name reached into an unexpected corner of science. In the eighteen-thirties and forties, British geologists fought a long and public argument about a set of rock strata in south-west England: were they old or very old, and where did they belong in the sequence? The dispute ran for years, took in fossils, coalfields and a good deal of professional temper, and ended with the naming of a whole period of the earth's history after the county where the rocks sat. The Devonian is the only geological period named after an English county, and it covers roughly sixty million years in which fish diversified enormously and plants took decisive hold on land. A name that means from Devon therefore points at both a small green county and a stretch of deep time that has nothing to do with it.

from Devon
The first element is the English county, whose name goes back to the people who were living there before the Saxons arrived. The ending is French in shape — the same one that finishes Yvonne and Simonne — and in French it marks a feminine. Put them together and the name says a place in one language and a sex in another. The American record gives this spelling to girls only a little more often than to boys, so the ending only half does the job it was borrowed for, which suggests the borrowing was about sound as much as grammar.
How the name formed
- A British people give their name to the land that becomes Devon
- The county name is used as a personal name in America
- The eighteen-forties: a geological period is named after the county
- The French ending -onne is added, giving Devonne
- The spelling is recorded for sons and daughters both

Fashion outlook
Devonne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A real place name at its root, with a documented history behind it
- Works for a son or a daughter without adjustment, and has a short form that suits both
- Two firm syllables that carry clearly and are never mispronounced beyond the stress
- It leans to girls, but a real share of children with this spelling are boys, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
- The stress can fall either way, so introductions should settle it early.
- The plainer spelling Devon is much commoner and will be substituted constantly.
