Deseree writes a French ending with English letters. The French form carries two accents, which tell a reader exactly where the stress goes and how each e is said; English has no accents, so the sound has to be spelled out instead, and doubling the e at the end is how English does it.

Where it comes from

The story of Deseree

The most consequential bearer of the French name changed the course of a royal house. Engaged briefly to a young Corsican artillery officer who then married somebody else, she married one of his generals instead; when the Swedish parliament went looking for an heir to a childless king and settled on that general, she became crown princess and eventually queen of Sweden. The dynasty founded by a French soldier who had begun the revolutionary wars as a sergeant still occupies the Swedish throne, which makes it the only European royal house descended from Napoleon's officer corps. The name reached English-speaking countries partly on the strength of the story and was respelled almost immediately, because English readers could not do anything with the accents.

Meaning

Desired, longed for

The French is a past participle used as a name, so it describes a completed action performed by somebody else: the child was wanted, by the people doing the naming. English cannot make a name that way and has to translate it into an adjective, which loses the grammar. The doubled e is a spelling decision and adds nothing to the sense.

Pronouncing Deseree

dez-uh-RAY

Three syllables with the stress at the back. The doubled e writes the vowel of day, not the vowel of see, which is the opposite of what the same letters usually do in English and is exactly why the French accents are needed in the original.

Fashion outlook

Deseree sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name has a clear and warm meaning that can be given to a child in two words.
  • Final stress gives it a definite finish and makes it carry across a room.
  • The spelling avoids the accents, which American systems routinely strip anyway.
What to consider
  • Desiree, Desirae and Desaray all exist for the same sound, so spelling it out is permanent.
  • The doubled e invites an ee sound from readers meeting it cold.
  • The meaning is a statement about the parents rather than about the child, which some people find odd on reflection.
