Deseray writes a French name the way an English speaker hears it, and the cost is that the ordinary word inside it disappears from the page. That word has a relative that became one of the most successfully faked documents of the last century.

The story of Deseray
A poem beginning with an instruction to go placidly amid the noise and haste circulated for decades with a note attached saying it had been found in a Baltimore church and dated to the sixteen-nineties. It had not. It was written in the nineteen-twenties by an Indiana lawyer named Max Ehrmann, and the false provenance came from a church rector who had included it in a compilation with the church's founding date printed underneath; readers took the date as the poem's. The mistake spread enormously, onto posters, records and greeting cards, and because everyone believed the poem was old and therefore out of copyright, nobody paid for it. Ehrmann's widow spent years in court over it. The poem's Latin title is a plural of the same word this name comes from, and it means things desired.
Meaning
desired; longed for
From the French past participle of a verb meaning to long for, used as a name from the Middle Ages. The Latin behind it is built on the word for a star, so the literal sense is something like awaited from the heavens. This spelling removes the accented e that marks the participle and writes the sound instead.
How the name formed
- desideratus
- Désirée
- Deseray

Pronouncing Deseray
dez-uh-RAY
Three syllables with the stress at the back. The French original has a final accented e that is sounded; this spelling writes that syllable as ay, which is what most American speakers say anyway.

Fashion outlook
Deseray sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is written as it sounds, so it can be spelled from hearing with a fair chance.
- Back stress gives a three-syllable name a definite landing.
- Desi detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
- Desiree and Desirae are both commoner and will be written for it.
- Removing the accents removes the French word, which French speakers will notice.
- The meaning is a participle rather than a quality, which some families find an odd thing to say about a child.
