Denine
Feminine · “belonging to Dionysos”
Denine is a French ending fitted to a French name, replacing another French ending that was already there. The result is a name that sounds like it should have a long history in France and does not have one anywhere: it was assembled in America, out of parts that came from somewhere else.

The story of Denine
French has a small set of endings that turn a man's name into a woman's, and -ine is one of the most productive of them. Joseph gives Joséphine, Claude gives Claudine, Ernest gives Ernestine, Georges gives Georgine; the ending does the same job over and over with almost no exceptions. English borrowed the whole apparatus wholesale in the nineteenth century, along with the names it had already made, and then — this is the American part — began applying it independently to names that French had never treated that way. Denine is that step. French made Denise from Denis centuries ago and never made a Denine; an American family took the name back to the fork and turned the other way, producing a form that follows a real French rule and has no French existence.

belonging to Dionysos
The name underneath is Denise, the feminine of Denis, and Denis descends by a long and heavily worn road from the god Dionysos. So the meaning that gets printed on lists is technically the god's — though by the time it reached medieval France it had passed through a martyred bishop and several centuries of ordinary use, and nobody naming a daughter Denise was thinking about wine or ecstasy. This spelling adds another layer of distance again, since it changes the ending that made the name recognizably Denise in the first place.
How the name formed
- Dionysios becomes Latin Dionysius, then French Denis
- French forms the feminine Denise
- The -ine ending makes feminines of Joseph, Claude and Ernest
- American use applies that ending to Denis instead, giving Denine

duh-NEEN
Two syllables with the stress at the end. Some speakers say DEE-neen, front-weighted, which sounds like a different name; because the spelling is rare there is no established version to appeal to, so whichever the family uses should be stated at introductions.

Fashion outlook
Denine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
