Demitra
Feminine · “of Demeter”
Whether this name is written with an e or an i depends on when the Greek was borrowed. The letter eta was said as a long e in classical Greek and as an i in the modern language, so Demetra and Dimitra are the same name transliterated from two different centuries. Behind both is the goddess who stopped the grain growing when her daughter was taken.

The story of Demitra
Demeter's daughter Persephone is taken to the underworld and Demeter, searching, lets nothing grow until she is returned for part of the year — the story the Eleusinian mysteries were built around and the one that explains the seasons. Names built on hers became extremely common in the Greek world and stayed so: Dimitri, Dimitra and Dimitrios are still among the most-used names in Greece. American records carry this spelling with Greek immigration, and the e-version marks a family transliterating in the older, classical way rather than the modern one.
Meaning
of Demeter
From Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain and the harvest. Her own name is usually read as containing meter, mother, with a first element that has never been settled — earth-mother is the traditional guess and is not secure. The personal names Demetrios and Demetra mean belonging to her, which is how Greek made names from gods.

Pronouncing Demitra
deh-MEE-truh
Three syllables, stress in the middle. Greek says Dimitra with an i in the first syllable and the same stress. English speakers occasionally say DEM-ih-truh with the weight in front, which is the one common slip.

The Melida test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Demitra's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Melida climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Melida's path sketches the road Demitra is walking now.
Demitra sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has a major Greek deity behind it and a story everyone half-knows.
- Demi and Mitra are both usable and sound nothing alike.
- It is entirely standard in Greece rather than an American coinage.
- Three open syllables that survive any accent intact.
- Dimitra is the modern Greek spelling and will be written by anyone from that tradition.
- Demetria and Demeter both sit close by and will be confused with it.
- The stress is occasionally moved to the front by English speakers, and correcting it is a small ongoing task.
