Where it comes from

The story of Demetris

One Demetrius built the largest machine anybody had ever seen. Nicknamed the Besieger, he came at Rhodes with a siege tower nine stories high, plated in iron, moved on eight wheels by a crew of thousands — and failed to take the city, which sold the abandoned machine for scrap and used the money to build the Colossus. The other Demetrius is a soldier and martyr who became the patron of Thessaloniki, and whose feast in late October marked the end of the agricultural year across the Balkans: the day shepherds came down from the hills, contracts ended, rents fell due. A name from a grain goddess, keeping the farming calendar under a saint's name for another thousand years.

Fashion outlook

Demetris sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and the name has been in continuous use for millennia.
  • It has native forms across Greece, Russia, Italy and Spain.
  • It shortens in several directions with quite different registers.
What to consider
  • Demetrius and Dimitri are both more familiar in America and his will be written as one of them.
  • The spelling is recorded for both sexes, though the boys hold nearly all of it.
  • The final s is a Greek nominative ending, which some families drop and others keep.
