Where it comes from

The story of Demarion

The De- prefix entered American naming through French and Louisiana Creole usage, where de marked a surname, and it became something quite different: a way of building new given names, freely combinable with almost any second element. That practice produced hundreds of names from the nineteen-sixties onward and is one of the most productive naming systems English has seen in a century. Marion, meanwhile, is a medieval French pet form of Marie that became a surname and then an American given name for both sexes. Demarion joins the two.

Meaningscholars disagree

the De- prefix on Marion, itself from Marie

Marion is a medieval French diminutive of Marie, so the second half descends from Miriam, whose own meaning has never been settled. The De- is the part with its own story: French and Creole naming in Louisiana used de and du in surnames, and African-American naming took the sound as a productive prefix in the twentieth century, giving DeAndre, DeShawn, DeMarcus and Demarion. It is a real pattern with a traceable source, and it adds sound rather than meaning.

Four syllables with the stress on the second. Some families say deh-mah-ree-OHN, keeping the ending fuller, and both are in use; the name is recent enough that neither has become standard.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Built by a real and well-documented American naming system rather than assembled at random.
  • Dee and Rio are both natural short forms and both are names elsewhere.
  • Four syllables give it weight, with everyday forms available underneath.
What to consider
  • Demarion, Demarrion, DeMarion and Damarion are all in use, including with a capital M.
  • Four syllables is long and the name will be shortened by nearly everyone.
  • The two stress patterns both circulate, so the child will be correcting people.
