Where it comes from

The story of Deanna

Edna Mae Durbin was signed by a Hollywood studio in 1936 and renamed Deanna — an anagram of her middle name — and became one of the biggest box-office draws in the world within two years. The American registers show the name appearing from almost nothing in 1937 and rising steeply for a decade; it peaked in the mid-1950s, and is one of the clearest documented cases of a studio invention entering the language.

Meaningscholars disagree

valley; heavenly

Read as a feminine of Dean, it is the Old English denu, 'valley', or the ecclesiastical title from the Latin decanus. Read as a respelling of Diana, it is the Latin for 'heavenly' or 'divine'. Since the name was constructed rather than inherited, neither reading is more than a plausible reconstruction.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Deanna went to 85 girls in 2025, but Deana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 98, which makes it the 862nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,311 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 16,401 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 18,909 for Deanna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The origin can be dated to a single year and a single decision, which very few names can offer.
  • Dee and Anna are both available and are very different in feel.
  • Three syllables with a strong middle, a rhythm that carries well.
What to consider
  • It was constructed rather than inherited, so any meaning is read into it after the fact.
  • Several spellings are in use.
  • It is closely dated to the middle of the twentieth century.
