Where it comes from

The story of Zadie

Genesis 17 has God rename both Abram and Sarai in the same passage, adding a letter to each; Sarah means princess. English produced Sadie by the usual substitution of d for r in pet forms. Zadie Smith made the Z spelling internationally known. It appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

princess, noblewoman

Through Sadie, an English pet form of Sarah, from the Hebrew sarah, 'princess' or 'noblewoman'. Genesis has God rename Sarai as Sarah. The Z spelling is a modern variation. The Hebrew is transparent and the reading undisputed.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The princess meaning is transparent and undisputed.
  • That God renames Sarah in the same passage as Abraham is a first-rate detail.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • Sadie is the standard form of the name.
  • One novelist dominates the association for many readers.
  • It reads as a diminutive rather than a full name.
