The story of Daymian
Cosmas and Damian were, in the tradition, twin brothers who practiced medicine in Syria in the third century and took no fee, for which they were called the anargyroi, the silverless ones. They were martyred under Diocletian. Their cult was enormous in both the Greek and Latin churches, and their names are in the Roman canon of the Mass. Damian became a standard European name — Damiano in Italy, Damien in France, Damian in Poland and Spain. The ay respelling is American and belongs to the last forty years.
Meaningscholars disagree
to tame, to subdue
Greek damazo means to tame or subdue, and Damianos is generally derived from it. That is the standard reading. A connection to Damia, a title of a fertility goddess, has also been proposed and is less favored. The ay spelling is American and modern and changes nothing about the sound or the sense.

Pronouncing Daymian
DAY-mee-un
Three syllables, stress on the first. The ay spelling makes the first vowel unmistakable, which the plainer Damian does not always do — some speakers say DAM-ee-un with a short a. Both are heard, and this spelling settles it.
