Its peak is 2010, and the record cannot say which of the three routes a given bearer took.

Our story of Daryan
There is a particular kind of modern name whose ancestry is a probability distribution rather than a line, and Daryan is one. Three quite different processes converge on the same seven letters. A family with Darius in mind produces Darian and then Daryan. A family with Darren in mind respells it. A family working with the Da- prefix and the name Ryan produces the same thing by a route that involves neither. All three happened in the same decades, in the same country, among families making the same kind of decision. What that means for a bearer is that the honest answer to a question about the name's origin is a list, and that any single confident answer found online is a guess presented as a fact. Saying so is more useful than picking one.

'holding firm the good', if it descends from Darius
Darian is usually treated as a modern extension of Darius, whose Old Persian original Darayavaus is analyzed as 'he who holds firm the good'. That is a settled etymology for Darius. Darren is separate and its origin is genuinely obscure — it appears in American records from the 1920s with no clear ancestor. And Daryan may simply be Da- plus -ryan. All three are live and the spelling settles none of them.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Daryan went to 14 boys in 2025, but Darian and Darrian are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 284, which makes it the 656th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,487 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 6,014 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 122,005 for Daryan itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Gerritt test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Daryan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gerritt climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gerritt's path sketches the road Daryan is walking now.
Daryan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Ryan is a complete, very familiar name available inside it.
- It has a possible descent from a genuinely ancient Persian king.
- The spelling is short and phonetic in English.
- Two stress patterns circulate and the spelling does not settle which.
- Darian, Darrian and Daryan all exist, so records will drift.
- The ancestry cannot be settled, so the meaning needs a qualifier.
