The story of Darick
Boethius was a Roman aristocrat and philosopher serving a Gothic king in Italy, accused of treasonable correspondence with Constantinople, and imprisoned at Pavia to await execution. In prison he wrote a dialogue between himself and Philosophy, who appears at his bedside and argues him out of self-pity: fortune is a wheel and always was, the things it takes were never his, and the good a person actually possesses cannot be confiscated. He was killed. The book he wrote in that cell was translated into English by King Alfred, by Chaucer and by Elizabeth the First, and was one of the most widely read works in Europe for a thousand years. The king who ordered his death is the man whose name is at the bottom of this one.
Meaning
Ruler of the people
The Germanic joins a word for a people or nation to the word for a ruler, the same second element that stands at the end of Frederick and Henry. English got the name from Dutch traders in the Middle Ages, which is why it looks nothing like the Latin form it descends from. The k and the first vowel in this spelling are American and add nothing.

DARE-ik
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The first vowel is the only real difference from Derek, and in unstressed American speech even that difference tends to disappear.

Fashion outlook
Darick sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is entirely familiar and never needs to be repeated.
- Rick and Dare are two short forms belonging to different generations.
- The name has a documented line running back to a real sixth-century ruler.
- Derek and Derrick are both far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
- The respelling changes little that can be heard, so it has to be defended on paper.
- It will be misread as Darrick and Darrik, adding two more spellings to the pile.
