Where it comes from

Our story of Darah

Ours, offered as ours. Names that appear once in a genealogy and nowhere else are a distinct category — they survived because the lists were copied and read for two and a half thousand years, and because early modern Protestants went through the genealogies looking for names nobody else was using. Dara in Chronicles is one of them. The Persian Dara is a king, and Hebrew dar is mother-of-pearl. Three possibilities and no way to choose.

Not established

The biblical Dara is named once and its meaning is not recorded. Separately Persian Dara is a form of Darius, holding firm the good, and Hebrew dar means a pearl or mother-of-pearl. None is established for this spelling.

Darah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

#723
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Darah went to 32 girls in 2025, but Dara is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 239, which makes it the 723rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,629 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,725 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 50,227 for Darah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
