The story of Damond
The story is set in fourth-century Syracuse under the tyrant Dionysius, and it is told by Cicero, by Valerius Maximus and by Diodorus, which is more attestation than most such tales get. Pythias, condemned to death, asks to go home to arrange his affairs; Damon offers himself as hostage and accepts that he will die if his friend does not return. Pythias is delayed, the execution is prepared, and he arrives in time. The tyrant, according to every version, asks to be admitted to their friendship. Whatever its historical basis, the story became the standard European example of friendship as a binding obligation, taught in schools for centuries, and it is the reason the name survived at all outside Greek.
