Damario
Masculine · “possibly 'of Mars”
Damario joins an American prefix to an Italian name, which is a less common combination than it sounds. Mario is one of the most Italian names there is, from a Roman family name; the Da- front is a mid-twentieth-century American element. The result has an Italian shape and an entirely different history. Its peak is 1984.

Our story of Damario
The Da- prefix produced two quite different kinds of name and they are worth telling apart. One kind joins it to an invented ending — Damar, Damon-adjacent forms, Dashon — and the result is a name with no ancestry at any point. The other joins it to a complete existing name: Damario, Damarcus, Dantonio, Dandre. Those have a visible seam and a real second half, and the effect is quite different. A Damario is placed by any listener as belonging to a particular American naming tradition and, at the same time, carries a name that has been used in Italy for two thousand years. Two histories in one word, neither of which knows about the other, and both of which are genuinely present. That is a more interesting object than either half alone.
Meaningscholars disagree
possibly 'of Mars', in the Mario element
Mario is the Italian form of Marius, a Roman gens name whose meaning is not settled. The most cited proposal connects it to Mars, the god, which would make it theophoric. Others derive it from mas, 'male', or treat it as Etruscan and unrecoverable. The Da- prefix carries no lexical content, so the meaning question rests on Marius, and Marius has no settled answer.

The Bing test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Damario's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bing climbed just as high around 1938, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bing's path sketches the road Damario is walking now.
