Where it comes from

Our story of Dalon

French salon means a large reception room, and English borrowed it in that sense for the gatherings hosted by literary women in Paris. English had already borrowed the same word earlier, in a slightly different form, and spelled it saloon, where it came to mean a large public room in a hotel or on a ship, and then in America a room where drink was sold. So the elegant Parisian salon and the swinging doors of a western saloon are the same French word, separated by about a century of borrowing and a considerable drop in social standing. English does this constantly with French: the early borrowing anglicizes and sinks, the later one keeps its accent and stays fashionable.

Fashion outlook

Dalon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Dal and Lon are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write, with nothing difficult in it.
  • It is rare in the record while being made of entirely familiar sounds.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Dallon, Dalen and Dalan are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
