Where it comes from

Our story of Daeja

A French philosopher and psychologist proposed the phrase déjà vu, already seen, in the late nineteenth century as a label for the specific sensation of finding a new situation familiar. It is one of the more successful coinages of its era: it went into English, German, Spanish and a dozen other languages in its original French spelling, and almost nobody who uses it has any idea it was invented by a named person in a particular decade. The phenomenon itself is still not fully explained, though it is common, brief and harmless in most people, and unusually frequent in one kind of epilepsy, which is where most of the research has come from.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The French word means already, and as a name it is presumably taken from the familiar phrase rather than used as an adverb. Nothing in the record documents the intention.

Fashion outlook

Daeja sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is widely familiar from the phrase, so it is rarely a total puzzle.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • The spelling is visually distinctive while being made of ordinary letters.
What to consider
  • Deja and Dejah are both commoner, so this spelling will be checked back with you.
  • Readers who do not know the French phrase will try an English j, which is the usual correction.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
