Cyrstal
Feminine · “ice”
Cyrstal holds all the letters of a very familiar name in a slightly different order. The sound is unchanged, the meaning is unchanged, and yet on paper it stops the eye — which is either the point of the spelling or an accident that was never corrected. Nothing in the record says which.

The story of Cyrstal
There is an older and much less obvious life for this name, and it belongs to Scotland. Christal, sometimes written Crystal, was a Scottish pet form of Christopher, used for men from the late medieval period onward and turning up in charters, rentals and kirk records for centuries. It has nothing to do with the mineral: it is Christopher shortened at the front and softened in the middle, the same way Alistair or Kirsty were made. When the Victorians began giving daughters the names of gems, they created a second and quite separate name with the same spelling, and the mineral won so completely that the Scottish man's name is now invisible. A name can be replaced without being lost, and this one was.
Meaning
ice; rock crystal
The Greek word behind it named ice, and it was applied to quartz because the ancients took clear quartz to be water frozen so hard it could not thaw. The mineral kept the word and the ice eventually lost it. As a name it is a Victorian jewel-name in the same family as Ruby, Opal and Pearl, and its meaning is not in dispute. The letters in this spelling are the standard ones rearranged; the rearrangement changes nothing about what the name means.
How the name formed
- Greek krystallos, ice, is applied to clear quartz
- Christal serves as a Scottish pet form of Christopher for men
- Victorian parents adopt jewel and mineral names for daughters
- American records carry Crystal, and then this rearrangement of it

Fashion outlook
Cyrstal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A completely familiar sound with a clear, concrete meaning behind it
- The short form Crys works in every setting from a playground to a signature
- Rare in this arrangement while sharing the ease of a very common name
- The letters will be reordered by nearly everyone who writes the name down, including the child in early school years.
- Spelling it aloud requires care, letter by letter, every single time.
- Nothing in the record distinguishes a deliberate spelling from a transcription error that was left in place, and that ambiguity travels with the name.
