Where it comes from

The story of Cymone

Simone came into English use from French as the feminine of Simon, bringing the Hebrew Shimon, heard, along with it. Cymone keeps every sound of Simone and changes only how the first syllable looks. That Cy- belongs to English words that came from Greek through Latin: cycle from kyklos, cymbal from kymbalon, cypress from kyparissos. Greek said them all with a k, and later Latin and French softened the k to an s before English took them in, so a C before y now reads as s. Cymone depends on that old softening to be read as Simone.

Meaningscholars disagree

heard, through Simone and the Hebrew Shimon

Cymone reads as a spelling of Simone, the French feminine of Simon. Simon in the New Testament stands for the Hebrew Shimon, from a verb meaning to hear, but Simon was also an ordinary Greek name linked to simos, snub-nosed, and the two met in one spelling. The Cy- adds no meaning and has no history of its own.

Fashion outlook

Cymone sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds exactly like Simone, a name with a long record in French and English.
  • The spelling is distinctive without changing the sound.
  • Every letter follows an English spelling rule, so it can be read correctly without help.
What to consider
  • It will be written Simone by nearly everyone who hears it first.
  • The first syllable can be read sy, as in cycle, so expect SY-mohn from strangers until the family's saying is known.
