Where it comes from

The story of Crystina

In 1638 Swedish colonists on the Delaware River built Fort Christina, named for their young queen, where Wilmington stands today; it was the beginning of New Sweden and of the first log cabins in America. In 1948 Andrew Wyeth painted Christina's World, showing his neighbor Anna Christina Olson, who could not walk because of a muscle disease, pulling herself across a Maine field toward her farmhouse; it hangs in the Museum of Modern Art. Crystina is one of the spellings American families used in the late twentieth century.

Fashion outlook

Crystina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds exactly like Christina, a name everyone knows.
  • Comes with Tina and Chrissy as ready short forms.
  • Distinct on paper.
What to consider
  • Almost everyone will write Christina or Kristina.
  • The y links it on paper to crystal, which it has nothing to do with.
  • Some will read the spelling as a mistake rather than a choice.
