Where it comes from

The story of Creston

A crest was a plume. The Latin word named the tuft on a bird's head and then the ornament on a helmet, which is why a coat of arms has a crest sitting on top of it — the part that would have been worn above the helm. Only later did the word move to the top of a hill or a wave, by an obvious extension that has now almost entirely displaced the original. So a name that reads as landscape is, at the bottom, about feathers and horsehair, and the connection between a heraldic crest and the crest of a ridge is not a metaphor but a straight line of use.

Crest settlement

The name is a place name in form, built from the word crest and the ending that closes English settlement names. Several American towns carry it, and whether a given family took it from a town, a surname or the sound is not recorded.

Creston sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Creston sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight with nothing difficult in it.
  • It has the settled sound of a place name rather than an invention.
  • It sits comfortably beside Preston and Weston without being either.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Preston or Kreston, which are both close by.
  • It reads as a surname or a town, which is the usual trade.
  • The name is closely tied to one American era.
