Where it comes from

The story of Courtland

The Van Courtlandt family were among the substantial Dutch landholders of colonial New York, and their name is on a manor, a park and a street. Courtland and Cortland both descend from the compound, and a New York county carries the second. The name moved into American given-name use in the nineteenth century, part of the same habit that took Van Buren and Livingston into front position.

Meaning

land of the court, enclosed land

From Dutch and English court, an enclosed yard or a manorial seat, and land; the compound named the ground belonging to a great house. The Dutch surname Van Courtlandt is the best-documented form.
