A great church assembly met at Constance, on the lake between Germany and Switzerland, to settle a crisis that had produced three rival popes at once — and it did settle it, deposing two, accepting the resignation of the third and electing one man everybody could accept, which is a more impressive piece of committee work than it sounds. The name also belongs to one of the more misjudged women in music: Constanze Mozart, married to a composer who left her with debts and small children, and who spent the following decades organizing concerts, selling manuscripts and arranging the biography that kept his music in print.
