Where it comes from

Our story of Comer

Braxton Bragg Comer was a cotton planter who built mills, got himself elected president of the Alabama railroad commission, forced the railroads to cut their freight rates, and then became governor. He raised taxes on corporations to pay for schools, doubled the length of the school year, and founded several colleges. He also supported the convict lease system and the disenfranchisement of Black voters, which is the ordinary and unresolvable difficulty of southern progressive politics in that period. His surname ended up on schools, streets and a county courthouse across the state, which is one plausible reason it turns up in front position on birth certificates there.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The surname has been traced both to an English occupational or descriptive term and to an anglicized Irish name, and the two are unrelated. As a first name it appears without explanation, in the ordinary pattern of surnames moving forward.

Comer sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1914, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Comer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everyone and never needs spelling out.
  • Two syllables and five letters: quick to write and easy for a child to learn.
  • It sits in the large family of surnames Americans are used to seeing in front position.
What to consider
  • It is also an ordinary English word, which children and colleagues notice and mention.
  • It reads as a surname to most listeners, which suits some families and not others.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
