Colyn writes with a y a name that has two entirely separate ancestries — one French, one Gaelic — and the record holds it almost entirely for sons. The French line is a good illustration of a suffix English borrowed and then forgot it had.

Where it comes from

Our story of Colyn

Medieval French made pet names by adding a small ending to a shortened name, and England imported both the endings and the results. Robert became Rob and then Robin; Nicholas became Col or Nick and then Colin; Peter became Perrin, which survives as a surname; Hugh became Huguin, which does not. The ending is the same one that produced words like bulletin and mannequin. What is unusual is how completely English absorbed the results and lost the rule: Robin and Colin are now felt to be names in their own right rather than diminutives of anything, and nobody adds that ending to new names. The suffix arrived, produced a small fixed set of names, and stopped working — which is what happens to almost every borrowed piece of morphology in English.

Not established

Two unrelated origins. As a French diminutive it is a small form of Nicholas, meaning nothing more than little Nick. As a Gaelic name it descends from a word for a whelp or young dog, used as a compliment. Neither can be shown for a given American family, and this spelling gives no clue.

Colyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2001, with 44 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Colyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • Col detaches as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
  • The name is thoroughly familiar even where this spelling is not.
What to consider
  • Colin and Collin are both far commoner and will be written for it.
  • The y is silent as a change, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
