Colene
Feminine
Colene is one letter and one language away from Colleen, and the letter matters. Colleen comes from an Irish word with a doubled l that does real work in Irish spelling; Colene has a single l and an ending borrowed from French, which points it at a different family altogether. The most likely parent is not Irish at all but the medieval English man's name Nicol.

Where it comes from
From Nicol as a medieval English man's name to Colene
The story of Colene
Nicol was an ordinary man's name in medieval England, the everyday form of Nicholas, and it is the source of surnames like Nicholls and Nicolson. French had a feminine of it, Nicole, and English eventually borrowed that back. In between, both languages produced short forms built on the second syllable rather than the first, which is where a name like this one can come from: the middle of a long name, cut out and given an ending. That route was heavily used in nineteenth-century America and produced dozens of names that look invented and are simply the middles of older ones. The Irish route is genuinely different, and worth being clear about: the word behind Colleen is a common noun that Irish people do not use as a name, and the name is entirely an American and Australian creation.

Not established
Two possible parents and no way to choose. If the name is a respelling of Colleen, it goes back to the Irish word for a girl, which is a common noun and not a name in Ireland. If it is built on Nicol or Nicole, the meaning descends from a Greek compound about victory and the people. The single l and the French-looking ending point at the second, but American families used both, and the spelling does not record which was meant.

Fashion outlook
Colene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar and will never need explaining.
- Cole and Lene are two very different short forms, and both stand alone.
- It is rare while being immediately recognizable, which is a comfortable position.
- It will be written as Colleen by almost everybody who hears it.
- Two possible parent names point at two unrelated meanings, and there is no tiebreak.
- It is firmly of an early twentieth-century American moment and has not returned.
