Clora
Feminine · “pale green”
Dropping an h can hide a whole language. Chlora carries the Greek spelling and the Greek word visibly; Clora does not, and the connection to a very productive Greek root vanishes with the letter. The sound is identical and the visible ancestry is gone.

The story of Clora
That Greek word is doing a great deal of work in modern English. Chloros meant a pale green, the color of young shoots, and it gives chlorophyll — the green in leaves — and chlorine, named for the color of the gas, and chlorosis, an old name for a form of anaemia that gave patients a greenish pallor. Three technical vocabularies, in botany, chemistry and medicine, all reaching for the same ancient color term. The name carrying it, spelled without the h, gives none of that away.
Meaningscholars disagree
pale green, fresh
If the source is the Greek element the sense is a pale yellow-green, the color of new growth. If the name is a respelling of Clara instead, an entirely different Latin word about brightness applies.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The missing h changes nothing audible; the ch in the Greek spelling is a plain k.

Fashion outlook
Clora sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, soft and completely easy to say on first hearing.
- The spelling gives no trouble at all.
- It connects to a large Greek family without looking like it does.
- Clara and Chlora are both close and the spelling gets confused with both.
- The Greek origin is invisible once the h has gone.
- The generation that used it is now very old.
