Cloie drops the h that marks the Greek letter chi, and the c is then doing the work by itself. Greek writes the sound at the front of this name with a single character; Latin wrote it ch to show that it was Greek; and English has spent two thousand years carrying a letter it does not need.

Where it comes from

The story of Cloie

The name turns up once in the New Testament as the head of a household. Paul, writing to the church at Corinth, says that he has been told about their quarrels by Chloe's people, which is the whole of the reference: no explanation, no husband mentioned, and a household identified by a woman's name in a period when that was not the default. Scholars have taken it as evidence that she was a woman of some standing, possibly a business owner with slaves or employees who traveled between the two cities. Nothing else is known about her at all, and she is the reason a fifth of the letters in the New Testament exist.

Meaning

Green shoot

The Greek word means the first green of a new plant, and it was used as a title of the goddess of grain in her aspect as the bringer of young crops. As a personal name it is that word taken directly. The h in the standard spelling marks a Greek letter and is silent in every language that borrowed it.

Fashion outlook

Cloie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling removes a silent letter without changing the sound at all.
  • The meaning is concrete, pleasant and easy to give a child in two words.
  • The spoken name is entirely established and never needs repeating.
What to consider
  • Chloe is the standard spelling everywhere and this will be corrected constantly.
  • The final e must be sounded, which readers meeting the name cold often miss.
  • It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in this spelling.
