Where it comes from

The story of Clemmie

The seedling was a cross that nobody had planted deliberately, and it was named for the man who spotted it — which is how a good many fruit varieties are named, though rarely so neatly. The name itself is much older: a Roman family name, then an early pope, then fourteen more of them, then an ordinary name across Catholic Europe. English produced Clement for men and Clementine for women, and Clemmie serves both, which is why the American record shows it given to boys and girls alike. The doubled m keeps the first vowel short, where Clement lets it run long.

Meaning

merciful, gentle

The Latin clemens means mild or merciful, and it was used as a Roman name before the church took it up. The sense has never shifted.

Fashion outlook

Clemmie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • It serves several long names of both sexes, which gives a family options.
  • The meaning is settled, gentle and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • It reads as a familiar form, and formal settings will look for something longer.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century.
