Cinda
Feminine · “light”
Lucinda was invented by Cervantes. He built it for a character in Don Quixote out of the Latin for light, and it entered European naming from the novel — which makes it one of a small number of names with a known author. Cinda is its back half, cut loose and given on its own.

The story of Cinda
Don Quixote was read across Europe within a generation of publication and its names traveled with it — Lucinda, Dulcinea and Quixote itself all entered languages that had no previous use for them. Lucinda became an English name in the seventeenth century and stayed in use. Cutting the front off a long name is the Italian and Spanish habit rather than the English one, so Cinda arrives by a route English does not usually take, and it became an independent American name in the nineteenth century.

light
Lucinda is built on Latin lux, light, with the -inda ending that Spanish and Italian use for elaborated names; Cervantes appears to have made it, since it does not occur before Don Quixote. That is the strongest reading for a name cut from it. The other road is Cynthia, from Mount Kynthos on Delos, which shortens to Cindy and could reach Cinda by another route. The light reading is the likelier and neither is certain.

Fashion outlook
Cinda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Lucinda is available as a formal long form with a documented literary origin.
- Five letters and two syllables, said correctly by everyone on first sight.
- The Latin behind it is clean and the meaning is short and pleasant.
- Cindy is far better known and this will be heard and written as it.
- It reads as a shortening, and the long form has to be supplied by the family.
- It belongs firmly to an earlier American period and has not returned.
