The story that sincere comes from sine cera, without wax — supposedly describing marble that had not been patched — has been repeated since the seventeenth century and has never had a shred of evidence. What is documented is the Latin word for unmixed. Sincere entered American given naming in the 1990s for both sexes, and Cincere, Cyncere and Sincere are the live spellings.
