Italian orthography is regular and unforgiving: before an e or an i, c says ch and g says j, and to get a hard k or g you insert an h, which is why Chianti is KYAN-tee and ghetto is GET-toh. English has no such system and treats c and g as broadly interchangeable decorations, so an American family reaching for an Italian look can pick either without hearing a difference. Cianni is what that produces: a spelling that reads as Italian to an American eye and as a different word entirely to an Italian one. That is not a fault so much as a fact about borrowing a system's appearance without its rules. Cianni's best year in United States records is 2000.
