The story of Chrystal
Crystal became an English girls' name in the nineteenth century, among the mineral names that arrived with Ruby, Pearl and Opal. Scotland also used Chrystal as a form of Christopher for men, which is a separate and older use. The feminine mineral name rose sharply in twentieth-century America, and the Chrystal spelling peaked in the early 1980s.
Meaning
ice, rock crystal
From the Greek krystallos, 'ice'. Greek and Roman writers used the same word for quartz because they took the mineral to be permanently frozen water. The error had a very long life, and it is why the English word covers both geology and glassware.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Chrystal went to 8 girls in 2025, but Crystal, Krystal and Cristal and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 362, which makes it the 621st most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,296 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,440 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Chrystal itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
