Christpher
Masculine · “Christ-bearer”
Christpher is Christopher with one letter missing, and the missing letter is a vowel that English immediately puts back. Take the o out and the middle of the name becomes a run of consonants no English speaker can produce, so readers restore it without noticing, and the name is said exactly as it always was.

The story of Christpher
The saint everyone knows is a giant who ferries travelers across a river on his shoulders and one night carries a child who grows heavier with every step, until he is carrying the weight of the world. It is a very good story and it is a literal reading of the name: somebody took Christ-bearer to mean a man who physically carried Christ, and the legend grew backwards out of the word. The name spread across Europe on the strength of it, because he became the patron of travelers and his image was painted at church doors where it could be seen from the road. The missing vowel in this spelling is a different kind of accident, and a harmless one; the cluster it leaves behind cannot be said, so English refuses the shortcut and reads the full name anyway.
Meaning
Christ-bearer
Greek christos and pherein, to carry: the one who carries Christ. It was a name taken up by early Christians as a description of what a believer was supposed to be, an interior claim rather than a story about anything that happened. That is worth knowing, because the famous story attached to the name came afterwards and was built out of it.

Fashion outlook
Christpher sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is among the most recognizable in English and needs no explanation anywhere.
- Three completely different short forms, Chris, Topher and Kit, covering three different centuries of taste.
- The meaning is clear, and the story attached to it is one a child will actually enjoy.
- The standard spelling is overwhelmingly more common, so this one will be read as a typing error and corrected without being asked.
- The missing letter changes nothing that can be heard, which makes it hard to explain and easy to lose.
- Chris is shared with several unrelated names, so the everyday form gives no clue what is on the certificate.
