Christion writes its ending the way English writes abstractions. Nation, action, opinion, question: the -ion ending belongs to things rather than to people, and putting it on the end of a name produces something that looks like a concept and is said like a man.

Where it comes from

The story of Christion

Denmark has had ten kings called Christian and the numbering is still running, which is unusual in modern Europe: most royal houses have quietly retired their repeated names or run out of them. The Danish line has alternated Christian and Frederick for five hundred years with such regularity that the next king's name has generally been predictable from his father's, and the current heir is expected to continue it. Norway used the name too while the two crowns were joined, and the capital of Norway was called Christiania for nearly three centuries because one of them rebuilt it after a fire. Very few given names have been carried by that many heads of state in one country.

Meaning

A Christian

Latin christianus, a follower of Christ, with the title christos behind it, itself a translation of a Hebrew word about anointing. The name is a statement of allegiance rather than a description. The ending here is a respelling of the standard -ian, chosen for its look, since both are said the same way in an unstressed syllable.

Christion sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 139 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Christion sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is established across most of Europe and needs no explaining.
  • Chris is a short, plain, adult everyday form available from the start.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • Christian is the standard spelling and this will be read as a slip.
  • The record carries this spelling for girls as well, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • The ending looks like the ending of an abstract noun, which is a small oddity readers notice.
