The story of Christain
Groups are often named by their opponents and end up keeping the name. The Acts of the Apostles reports that the followers were first called Christians in Antioch, and the Greek verb used implies a label given rather than chosen; the movement's own words for itself were the way, the brothers, the saints. The same thing happened repeatedly afterwards: Methodist began as mockery of a group's methodical habits at Oxford, Quaker was a magistrate's jibe, Tory was an Irish word for an outlaw, Whig a Scottish one for a horse thief, and impressionist came from a hostile review. In each case the insulted group took the word and wore it, which removes its sting and, eventually, its origin: nobody now hears Methodist as a joke.

Greek christos, anointed
From Latin Christianus, a follower of Christ, from Greek christos, anointed, itself a translation of Hebrew mashiach. Christain transposes the last two vowels of Christian and is said the same way; the peak of this spelling is 1995.
