Where it comes from

The story of Chrissa

Two Greek words begin almost identically in English spelling and have nothing to do with each other. One is the word for anointed, which produced this name and everything related to it. The other is the word for gold, and it is the front of chrysanthemum, which means golden flower, and of chrysalis, which is the name for a butterfly pupa and means the golden one — because the pupae of some butterflies are genuinely metallic gold, and the monarch's in particular looks like it has been gilded and studded. It is also in chrysolite, a green-gold stone, and in the chrysler of medieval alchemy. English collapsed the two Greek sounds and the spellings drifted together, so that a word about a caterpillar and a word about a messiah now look like relatives and are not.

Meaning

follower of Christ

Whichever of the longer names this shortens, they all descend from the Greek word meaning anointed, itself a translation of a Hebrew title. The added vowel at the end is a modern device for turning a clipping into a full name and carries nothing of its own.

Pronouncing Chrissa

KRISS-uh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ch says k because it is a Greek letter written the Latin way, which is the only thing about the spelling that needs knowing.

Chrissa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Chrissa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Chris comes off it at once and works in any setting.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say quickly and clearly.
  • The family behind it is understood everywhere in the Western world.
What to consider
  • Krissa, Chrisa and Crissa are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • It reads as a nickname with a vowel added, and people will ask what it stands for.
  • Which formal name it belongs to is not recorded, so the answer to that question has to be a family one.
