Our story of Cheyene
The city that carries this name is the capital of Wyoming, and the territory around it did something in eighteen sixty-nine that no state or territory in the country had done: it gave women the vote, in full, on the same terms as men. The motives were mixed and not especially noble — there were very few women in the territory, some legislators wanted the publicity, and at least one apparently expected the governor to veto it. He signed. Women served on juries in the territory within months, and a woman was sworn in as a justice of the peace. When Wyoming applied for statehood twenty years later and Congress objected to the provision, the territorial legislature sent back a message saying they would stay out of the Union a hundred years rather than come in without their women. Congress gave way.

Fashion outlook
Cheyene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is immediately familiar even though the spelling is not.
- Back stress gives the name a clear shape and makes it carry.
- Several short forms come out of it, and they sound nothing like each other.
- The standard spelling of the place name is much commoner and will be written by default.
- The name labels a people who call themselves something else entirely, and that is worth knowing before choosing it.
- The record holds this spelling for sons as well, and for more of them than daughters, so it signals nothing either way.
