The story of Cheyanne
The Cheyenne are a Plains nation whose name entered English through French traders who had it from the Sioux. The city of Cheyenne, Wyoming, took the name in 1867. Its use as a girls' name is late twentieth-century American, part of a broader turn toward Western place and nation names, and the Cheyanne respelling peaked in the late 1990s.

those of a different speech
From the Dakota Sioux šahíyena, generally read as 'those who speak a foreign language' — from a root about red or about unintelligible speech. The Cheyenne call themselves Tsitsistas. The name English uses is therefore an exonym, given by neighbors rather than chosen.

The Corine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cheyanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Corine climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Corine's path sketches the road Cheyanne is walking now.
Cheyanne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
